Live Review: Waterlines, The Human Veil & Inheritor, Boom, Leeds

Tonight promises to be lively with new masters of nu-rave metal Waterlines alongside metalcore wrecking crew The Human Veil and Leeds lads Inheritor. We’re expecting full-on moshing shapes and lots of lights! Whistle posse, hold tight indeed!

Inheritor

Inheritor are debuting their new lineup tonight and vocalist Tye is sounding great! The band opening with an incendiary, ‘Stay For The Cure’ segueing into the crushing ‘Death Spiral’, Tye exudes confidence and is the consummate hype man, which is ideal for this three piece. Older tracks like ‘Reptilian’ sounding more powerful with the weight of mighty new drummer Will Thomas and Tom McCall on six string duties. This is a rejuvenated band and it’s very heartening to see. Oldie ‘Denizen’ once again benefitting from a weightier sound and the audience warmed up nicely. Tye’s voice is in top form bouncing around his many ranges, the frontman is an expert at vocal gymnastics and it’s great to hear him properly with a good mix. Tonight, Inheritor have introduced and cemented their new line, taken it for a proper drive out and opened it right up. As Inheritor end with an awesome, ‘13 Feet Beneath’ they do so with a raft of new converts.

The Human Veil

Mancunian bruisers The Human Veil’s sound is equal parts sledgehammer riffing with a modern nu metal revivalist edge that’s becoming increasingly current. Neck snapping breakdowns are exchanged with the kind of energy last seen here at last year’s Graphic Nature gig. Giving the Inheritor boys well justified props on doing an excellent job was a nice touch and it’s always pleasant to see camaraderie in the scene. Tonight, The Human Veil put in a truly energetic performance and are clearly a class act. There’s an utterly raucous united front on show at Boom tonight. By the end of their spirited set there is much head banging and people smiling and no doubt a lot of T-shirts sold, and you can’t say fairer than that! A new track gets its maiden voyage and promises much for the future. Solid ender track ‘Dark Planet’ enters in forbidding crushing style and ignites an enthusiastic mosh pit to see the band happily on their way.

Waterlines

The Waterlines live experience is part hardcore rave half hardcore breakdowns. Crushingly heavy but dancefloor savvy in equal measures with singer spitting bars under his growling and even some four to the floor action that will have you throwing shapes and throwing down in equal measures. One thing is for sure they are infectious! Dedicating their cover of ‘Pretty Green Eyes’ to anyone who had an, “awkward chavvy phase,” at school and inserting this particular earworm right back our ears which is where it’s been since they dropped this concoction late last year. Frontman Benji Mars has a very convincing pop rave vocal alongside his guttural roar, and it seems as far as versatility is concerned, he’s got it covered from many angles.

Sexy metalcore, have you heard that before? Waterlines have that covered too it seems, introducing a slinky sexy number, we’re told they tried to write a track you could strip to, and we can see it to be honest, with all standing members of the band gyrating it’s turned a little Full Monty inside here! Waterlines seem to revel in doing exactly the opposite of what you’d expect at all times and it’s the reason they are causing such a stir in the UK right now. A venue wide daisy chain mosh appears to have blown out the power momentarily but they’re soon back to destroy the finale of their set. Waterlines are doing something that’s totally theirs and with absolute bangers like ‘Brace’ and ‘Prey’ in their war chest the scene is theirs to take.
