DragonForce
Warp Speed Warriors – Napalm Records
Four-and-a-half-years since they released their last long player, the kings of extreme power metal are back to claim their crown. This has been DragonForce’s longest gap between albums, and while they’ve been away there have been several pretenders to the throne, but Warp Speed Warriors illustrates why DragonForce are reigning monarchs. Opening with the amphetamine-infused ‘Astro Warrior Anthem’, the band immediately take things into hyperspace, blowing the needle off the speedometer and tying the listener up in all sorts of knots. However, what elevates DragonForce above their peers is the sheer variety in their arsenal; they are equally adept at the slower songs, and if you were ever called on an epic quest to save the universe, then ‘Kingdom Of Steel’ would make the perfect soundtrack. ‘Space Marine Corp’ is sure to raise a few smiles, while ‘The Killer Queen’ is certain to do the same with swords. After covering Celine Dion on their last album, the ‘Force tackle Taylor Swift’s ‘Wildest Dreams’ (as a bonus cut) and put a decidedly power metal spin on this quintessential pop tune, and they win hands down. If you want to go on a wild adventure, and without leaving your armchair, look no further than Warp Speed Warriors.
