After independently amassing over 6 million streams across streaming and video platforms via previously released singles from their debut 2021 EP ‘Nocturnal Youth’, Pistols At Dawn have returned with their latest album ‘Ascension’, which was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer and engineer Sylvia Massy (Tool, System Of A Down, Johnny Cash).

‘Ascension’ sees the introduction of new vocalist Cris Hodges, who’s work has been found on the soundtracks for several blockbuster movies including ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Baywatch.’ Drummer Adam Jaffe remarked on adding Hodges to the lineup: “Cris Hodges joining PAD can only be equated to what it must have felt like when Taylor Hawkins joined Foo Fighters. From our very first hour-long conversation to our first rehearsal, it felt like it was meant to be. Cris is an elite front man with vocal abilities sent from the Gods.

The track listing for ‘Ascension’ is:

  1. Under The Surface
  2. Fly
  3. Keep Me Guessing
  4. For You
  5. The Truth
  6. Gravity
  7. Get Away
  8. Dictator

Speaking about the inspiration behind the video and the song, Jaffe had this to say:

““Under The Surface” reflects the bubbling dissatisfaction many feel in their basic office space positions, and the havoc they are ready to create in response. We loved the “Office Space” imagery combined with the dinginess of “Fight Club” and “Joe vs The Volcano”. To capture that, we looked back on some of our favourite music videos, to see how the artists utilised imagery and scenes from classic films to create new and compelling works, which we’re happy to share with Devolution’s readers! Enjoy””

“One” Metallica – (Johnny Got His Gun)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM8bTdBs-cw

Adam Jaffe – “”One” is an all-time great, and the video manages to capture the frustration and angst of an unnamed soldier perfectly. The archaic medical facility, the disregard for the man, and the encroaching knowledge that the viewer knows this isn’t going to end well creates an admirable tension.”

“Everlong” Foo Fighters – (Evil Dead)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBG7P-K-r1Y

AJ – “The song is nothing but epic, and the band managed to perfectly capture both the tension and humour that Raimi had running through the film!”

“Stupid Girl” Garbage (Se7en)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdw-e9UXW50

AJ – ““Se7en”’s dark and ugly visual aesthetic at first glance is a weird bed fellow when talking about a music video for a 90’s pop-rock band, but Garbage’s moody power and Manson’s cutting self-reflection makes the pairing oddly perfect.”

“Sonne” Rammstein (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StZcUAPRRac

AJ – “It’s hard to talk about visual storytelling and music videos without discussing Rammstein. While “Deutschland”, “Pussy” and “Mein Teil” are more shocking, “Sonne”’s subversion of the classic fairytale inspired countless metal heads to both rethink what music videos could be and to get a Rosetta Stone subscription.”

“The Ghost Of You” My Chemical Romance (Saving Private Ryan)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCUpvTMis-Y

AJ – “My Chemical Romance captured the hearts and minds of an entire generation, and “The Ghost Of You” remains a firm favourite for us. The “Saving Private Ryan” influence, Hollywood production standards and World War 2 setting perfectly typify the song’s themes of loss and fear.”

“Movies” Alien Ant Farm (Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, The Karate Kid, Edward Scissorhands)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ2t4jfVTiU

AJ – “Alien Ant Farm got the assignment! (laughs) This video is fun. Anyone of this era remembers where they were when they first saw this, and it’s still just as much fun twenty years on!”
