Heavy vocals don’t tend to indicate happiness. More like hate – if you can actually make out what’s being spat. In Mercers’ case, you can hear every word of Olly James’ dissatisfaction and discontent. The band’s Brit post-hardcore base soars into melodies and soundscapes, but no matter how sweet the tune becomes, they never stray from their fresh take on showing vulnerability while sounding vicious. ‘The Liminal Tapes’ tackles politics and mental health fearlessly but with ferocity. The truth hurts. But Mercers make it sound so fucking good.
