Review: Mayday Parade – Sugar

Mayday Parade

Sugar

Album trilogy projects are tricky things to pull off. They are usually penned over a wide time expanse where artist dynamics naturally change, not to mention music itself is continually moving on. So with the upbeat ‘Sweet’ and introspective ‘Sad’ already released to much acclaim the pressure was definitely on Mayday Parade to make this third instalment equally as hard hitting. This they’ve done, and in some style too. They’ve cleverly written and released all the material over a shorter time period than you’d expect with ‘Sweet’ out just 15 months ago. The first two parts are EPs too whetting the appetite for more and keeping the whole vibe fresh.  Musically you get the melody heavy excellence you’d expect. There’s a silky smoothness to each song on ‘Sugar’ which proves how invaluable accumulated experience can be. Everything stays within the safe zone from a fan perspective while pushing at the quality envelope. As a stand alone and as a part of a wider project this is a fine record, not so much the best of the three but a natural conclusion.
