Car Bomb
Tiles Whispers Dreams
Solid Grey/LLC
You may or may not have seen the movie Lucy starring Scarlett Johansson where she basically becomes at one with the entire internet and uploads herself, this is at times what Tiles Whispers Dreams feels like. The Long Island Math Metal squad are on super technical form on this dizzying EP and feel like a free jazz Meshuggah with an occasional penchant for melody as is displayed briefly on bruising opener Blindsides. The major difference between Car Bomb and the aforementioned Swedes is that where Meshuggah will pummel you with polyrhythms, Car Bomb are an ever shifting, morphing creature that defies space and time in a rhythmic sense anyway. Paroxysm injects blast beats and a fair amount of groove inside its intricate phrases and title track Tiles Whispers Dreams feels like being forced feet first into one of those compactor machines, in the best way possible of course. Car Bomb’s genius really comes through when you surrender yourself to it so when they actually slip into a conventional groove it’s so satisfying. This EP continues a flawless run for these certified boffins and is essential listening for fans of pushing the envelope to its limits.
