Atavistia
Cosmic Warfare
C-Squared Music
Described as a ‘wall of sound’ Atavistia’s upcoming release is exactly that – in the best possible way. The melodic death/black metal band from Vancouver, Canada has unleashed a powerful beast in Cosmic Warfare. Opening with the instrumental ‘Omega Nova’ which gives futuristic gothic orchestral vibes fit for an opening of an epic movie, The title track and single release ‘Cosmic Warfare’ commences with thunderous guitars and drums feeling as though every note is a storm thrashing against your car windscreen. Mattias Sippola’s vocal range is impressive and unwavering, from brutal guttural growls to mesmerising and melodic. Some moments throughout have purposeful glitches and ‘sci-fi’ style sound effects which is very apparent at the start of ‘Spectral Rebirth’. Mixing different elements including a choir, their unique approach and sound fit together seamlessly. Although only a 6-track album, songs average around 9-11 minutes in length taking you on a rollercoaster with such precision in their craft it almost makes your eyes water. Ending with ‘Forgotten Silence’ like previous tracks it is meticulously pieced together and full of depth and fervour. You can liken Atavistia to other bands such as Wintersun and Dimmu Borgir but they have their own edge and are pushing new boundaries which help them to stand alone.
