It’s incredible to see how far London singer song writer Cassyette has come in such a short space of time. From last year’s ‘Pilot’ event to gracing the full sized event the electro rocker’s journey has taken in a support slot with My Chemical Romance and a Heavy Music Award. You get a feeling even the sky is no limit for the chirpy and instantly likable superstar in waiting. Gary Trueman had a quick catch up chat which included discussing the Pilot vs full Download and a love of progressive artists.
It’s great to see you back at Download again a year after the Pilot.
“It’s great to be here”
What was it like to be out on that big stage so early on?
“It was crazy. Everyone was up for it. It makes it a lot easier when everyone is going for it, ready for a big day. It’s been an amazing festival. It always is.”
You’ve had an amazing twelve months. You played the Pilot so how did you find the difference between the two?
“It was quite a big difference because the Pilot was ten thousand people and this is very different because there’s so many more people here. And you’re playing to a lot more people that have never seen you before. I try to make my sets exciting and lively so people can let their hair down and have a good time and I think a lot of people did that. It seemed that way. I loved it.”
You won best breakthrough artist at the Heavy Music Awards. Did you know ahead of time you’d won?
“No, I didn’t know. I was shocked when they said my name haha.”
And Wargasm presented it to you which was a good way of showing artists supporting other artists.
“I know. Yes it is. They are dear friends of mine so it makes it even better. It was such a good ceremony. I got an award… I couldn’t believe it.”
You’re doing really well at the moment. This year has seen you just fly.
“It’s been really exciting. I’ve been writing music for a long time so finally people are getting to hear it. It is always about the music and it comes from my heart. I think a lot of people are feeling that too and totally get behind it because it’s for them.”
Are you staying at Download for a while now? Are you looking to see anyone play today?
“We’re actually going back later but I really want to catch Deftones.”
Are they a band you’re a big fan of?
“Yes, a big fan. I’m excited to see them.”
They’re a progressive band from a previous era aren’t they?
“Totally. I always admire progressive bands and bands that have a big history behind them and have done something different at the time when something else was considered cool when they maybe weren’t. Same with Korn. I’m a massive Korn fan as well, and they went through that as well. It’s really inspired me because I think I get a lot of judgement because I’m a girl as well. You really have to prove your self. It sucks that that’s the case but you do.”
Women have had to try so much harder for so long it’s honed their skills and made them so good hasn’t it?
“Yes. Music is for everyone. Don’t hate on someone for doing it. Fuck that shit! This is an exciting space to be in. It shouldn’t be about one type of person it should be about every single person. That’s how a community is formed and that’s how it stays strong.”
And women are fifty per cent of that community.
“Too right. Girls to the front.”
