Dark Ability – Self Release

Those familiar with Mariangela Demurtas as lead vocalist with Tristania and Ardours will find this production quite different. In her own words describing her debut solo EP, Demurtas says she is ‘taking chances and trying something new’. The first helping is piano-based track ‘City’ which sets the tone with thoughtful vocals, lyrics, and instrumentals. ‘Classic’ is the most recent single release, standing out musically, and vocally displaying how versatile her style and abilities are. Although Demurtas’ background is in goth metal and rock, this work could easily escape that niche into a wider audience, still with a sprinkle of darkness. Whether or not intended, this piece gives a 90s alternative rock and pop vibe reminiscent of bands such as The Cranberries and some Natalie Imbruglia with Demurtas’ unique voice and stunning Italian Sardinian accent shining through. ‘Crossing Time’ is sanguine yet wistful, set to evoke emotions within the listener. ‘Forgiverance’ is another soulful and sensitive melody to finish an elegant display. Certainly, if you fancy something branching from goth into something more stylised with unquestionable talent this is well worth dipping your toes into.
