VOWWS
I’ll Fill Your House With An Army
Out Of Line Music
VOWWS first melted our cold black heart at Download this year with their performance, and then we were lucky enough to interview Rizz and Matt. Since then, they have rarely been off our stereo for more than a couple of days. Slinky, sultry, artistic and somehow retro and modern at the same time. This wonderfully titled album opens with the goth stomp of ‘Blood’s On Fire’ and takes you by the hand into dark clubs and reckless decisions. It’s an intoxicating brew like on the twisting ‘Pulls Me Apart’. ‘Shudder’ boasts a chorus melody that reminds us of Korn played by KMFDM trust us, this makes sense when you hear it, and it should do since it actually has Munky from the Bakersfield metallers and NIN’s Josh Freese on drums. Matt’s vocals on this album are very direct and almost emotionless, providing the perfect foil for Rizz to glide over with her unique style and effortless cool. The guest pairing of Munky and Freese continues on the post punk four beat of ‘Silhouette’ and the trying to be happy and failing anti-pop of ‘Re-Animator’. The friends in high places don’t stop there, as A Perfect Circle’s genius Bill Howardel is also on board to help birth this sublime collection. But none of these names can outshine Rizz and Matt, though; they have tons of personality and have an almost familiar but utterly unique sound and vibe to their whole performance. Spooky and dreamy but with enough punch to bang your head and shake your ass at the same time. As the creepy crawl of ‘Waterline’ plays out, it’s a melancholic farewell; your heart is theirs like a super fan teenager staring at a poster on the wall, at least ours is, and we are smitten.
