Review: Soulfly – Chama

Soulfly

Chama

Nuclear Blast

Chama means ‘bring the fire’ and that is exactly what this beast of an album does. We should all know by now Soulfly’s reputation for inventive tribal infused extreme metal. They are masters of their craft. Even so this record punches hard and has a few surprises too. Alongside Max Cavalera’s distinctive vocals carried with genuine ire we get a little clean vox in the mix too. There are some less full on passages that add depth, particularly when the smart production comes into play. At the heart of it though this is a beautifully brutal work, one that ignites at every level. It takes aim at greed and corruption scoring hit after hit. Years of experience gained can be found in every note. It’s quite remarkable that 13 albums in Soulfly sound so damn energetic, and are finding new avenues to explore that meld cultural and metal music so well.
