Icon Of Coil
Serenity Is The Devil (25th anniversary remaster)
Metropolis Records
To mark the 25th anniversary of their debut album, ‘Serenity Is The Devil’, the Norwegian trio Icon Of Coil are releasing a digitally enhanced version that includes a new bonus track for old and new fans alike to sink their teeth into. ‘Regret’ (the most popular track from the original release according to spotify) certainly sounds slicker and still has that heady EBM vibe their fans covet and the band are famous for. For those unfamiliar their vocals are accessible, melodic and brooding. We love the resurgence of the 00’s vibe and distorted vocals in ‘Shallow Nation”. The perfect track you would imagine in a strobe light lit industrial style night club. ‘Former Self’ is fast paced, featuring somewhat futuristic and dystopian style sound effects and distant whispers in its opening leading to energetic and commanding vocals to match the soundtrack. ‘Floorkiller’ is a synth dream with layered effects and instrumentals. We were excited to hear their new track ‘SEC FOUR’ and see how it compares to their older work. We wouldn’t necessarily describe it as a more mellow song but it has a different pace and definitely feels more modern. Vocals have that characteristic baritone sound which is melodic and oozing with attitude with a touch of distortion. We think die hard fans will be tripping over themselves to hear it, and it can sway some new ears to delve into their back catalogue. After being inactive for a number of years Icon Of Coil still have it.
