Avatar
Don’t Go In The Forest
Black Waltz Records
Making confident progress ever since their inception back in 2001 Avatar have gained something of a cult following. When we say cult we don’t mean some niche group either, their popularity is massive, their fans passionate – very passionate. You can see (and hear) why too. This latest album has way more depth to be described as merely ‘metal’ or anything else for that matter. Certainly it rocks out but its construction is astute and wide reaching. The musicianship is deft and crystal clear aided by silk like production. Johannes Eckerström’s vocals move seamlessly from near screamo, through classic rock fry, well toned clean and on to moody gothic giving each song just what it needs. We know the band always look the part, we can see how much effort they put into their visuals with the latest videos, but without great music to back it up it’s just a veneer. And happily this record shows just how authentic Avatar are – right down to the bone. It bounds along enthusiastically, carried by powerful riffs, huge hooks and upbeat writing. In a world full of gloom this is just the escape fans need.
