When I’m With You

Cooking Vinyl

Two decades in and The Subways’ raw, rattling, smash and grab songs still sound as fresh and fierce as they did way back when. That spikey, DIY made-in-a-bedroom sound of theirs has taken the three-piece to the top; all around the world, and on the biggest stages. Been on the death metal for a bit too long and not sure who The Subways are? They’re the band that brought you ‘Rock and Roll Queen’ (which closes this album). There ya go. That’s them. And that track’ll be in your head now for the foreseeable. You’re welcome… ‘When I’m With You’ starts with debut single ‘Oh Yeah’, made by three teenagers going hard on the fuzz, the in yer face bratty vocals and the potential for world domination. This record is a selection of singles, fan faves and two new songs, tracklisted to give the energy and experience of a live show. The new ones (‘I Need To Feel You Closer’ and ‘Passenger’s Side’) still sound like the band’s kids-at-a-birthday-party-jacked-up-on-sugar trademarked music, but with a little less Mountain Dew and a bit more of a mellow, cup-of-tea-and-a-sit-down vibe added in. ‘When I’m With You’ is the band’s back catalogue which has been a soundtrack to their fan’s lives. It’s their shared journey. It’s The Subways’ gift to them. And this makes the record pretty damn special.
