Frayle
Heretics & Lullabies
Napalm Records
With doom laden tempos and eerie overtones Frayle have been rapidly carving out (or should that be eviscerating) a niche all of their own. The foundation to this extraordinarily absorbing album is built of synth rock slowed down to a level which pummels and pounds. The dressing is Gwyn Strang’s dark ethereal vocals. Combined they are oddly both unsettling and uplifting. It comes as no surprise that this record is timed for release just ahead of Halloween, it is perfect for this most magical of seasons. We even get a masterful reworking of Lana Del Rey’s ‘Summertime Sadness’, and really, move over Del Rey because this version is stunning. This traditionally difficult third full album is a triumph that can be added into the cauldron of what has gone before. It shows genuine progress by one of music’s truly exciting acts.
