Review: Coroner – Dissonance Theory

Coroner

Dissonance Theory

Century Media Records

It’s been 33 long years since Coroner’s last album, a period that has seen great social and global upheavals, but one thing that has remained constant is the band’s pioneering spirit. A career that has found them pushing at sonic boundaries renders them progressive in its truest definition and their sixth long player Dissonance Theory is a truly mind bending affair. After the brief, unsettling intro, ‘Oxymoron’, Coroner set out their stall with ‘Consequence’, a track that manipulates the fabric of space, travelling far beyond the usual 4/4 time signatures to boldly go where no band has gone before. Chromatically colourful, this album is a feast for the ears, and like wheels within wheels it’s an eternally revolving experience and it is this evolution that makes it so engrossing. However, Coroner never lose sight of important stuff like actual songs and ‘Crisium Bound’ becomes a haunting affair, whilst ‘The Law’, aided by a punchy production, is so heavy you won’t be able to lift the vinyl version from your turntable. Dissonance Theory is an album that will sate long term fans, but Coroner certainly aren’t looking backwards and by producing a record that places them firmly in the present, they’ve secured their future.
