Review: IAN – Come On Everybody, Let’s Do Nothing!

Come On Everybody, Let’s Do Nothing!
Human Worth

While we all love our classic song structures, the more free-form nature of post-metal makes for a more rewarding listen if you can find the good stuff. It is a more explorative genre, and songs feel more like living, breathing organisms when allowed to progress and grow forth from simple beginnings. As a coalescence of mates across twenty years, what can IAN do with their debut, ‘Come On Everybody, Let’s Do Nothing!’?

You know what? Post-metal needs more orchestral strings, and IAN makes this painfully apparent. There is a terrific warmth and richness that they bring to the brooding, building song structures across the album, and none more so than on the wickedly dark ‘Building Pyramids’. Goodness, it is a spectacular demonstration of how to build tension to a cathartic relief, where that carries a degree of malevolence, ‘Selma’ serenades serenely before pulverising near its conclusion, and it is all so delightful.

It may have the name of a Fall Out Boy album, but IAN’s ‘Come On Everybody, Let’s Do Nothing!’ is a terrific debut album from the five-piece veterans. Their shared experiences over two decades of musicianship have culminated in a debut that deserves to be heard amongst the post-metal circles. Three-quarters of an hour well spent.
