Review: Rún – Rún

Rún

Rún

Rocket

This is a release that grabbed our attention so much on the first single that we instantly emailed their PR for a copy. The sound of Rún covers a lot of ground from the beautiful tender opening introduction into Paidir Pobal (Pupil) into the contrasting fuzzy drone and sheer weight of the layers of sound that follow. There’s so much detail just in this first track. Fans of Swans will love this album but also will fans of the likes of Big Brave. This Irish act certainly has a lot of scope and colours in their sonic palette. The production here is exquisite too, it’s a deep, cinematic sound with so much clarity. On Your Death My Body, Rún sounds like the collaboration between Massive Attack and Julie Christmas that definitely should have happened. The wigged out space jam of Terror Moon injects some Killing Joke-esque stomp into proceedings. Lead single Strike It is urgent and huge sounding and shows so much imagination. Closing track Caoineadh is a slow build steeped in heritage that rises like the sun into its beautiful crescendo and final deconstruction. This truly is a multi coloured album of magnitude and imagination and one I’d firmly recommend.
