Wolfskull
Midnite Masters
Metalapolis Records
Wolfskull. Wolf – Skull. Sounds pretty scary doesn’t it? You know, like a snarling, salivating, clawing creature, but without its fur and body. Ugh. Just the creepy skeleton bony bit at the top of the predator. Shudder. But dogs are descended from wolves. Labradors are dogs. Therefore Labradors are part wolf. And looking at the daft dozing Lab presently laying in the middle of the floor, there is a parallel to be drawn here. You see, Wolfskull’s new release comes with a fair bit of clout should it be required, courtesy of songs like ‘Son of Light’, ‘Holler in the Hollow’ and ‘Jaguarette’. But ‘Midnite Masters’ also unleashes the band’s softer side. The title track opens the album with a catchy chorus and beautiful melody. ‘Destyna’ is approaching ballad territory. Albeit in the style of Nick Cave. ‘Call of the Wayward Ones’ is what the Wild West would sound like played on guitar. ‘Midnite Masters’ is a treat of a classic rock record, with a little metal around its edges and a touch of goth creeping in. Wanna join the Wolfskull adventure? Saddle the f**k up cos we ride at dawn.
