Review: Born Of Osiris – Through Shadows

Born of Osiris

Through Shadows

Sumerian Records

A face-melting head-f*ck of an album, ‘Through Shadows’ crushes your skull to within inches of annihilation with its progressive metalcore screamers. Melodious, post-apocalyptic tracks like ‘Elevate’ (which sounds like a really, really cross Enter Shikari) bring you back from the edge of cranial catastrophe. Which is good, because not only does no one want a head injury on their hands, but also because it shows the diversity of these futuristic metal savages. ‘Through Shadows’ continues the trend of choruses that cool down a touch before firing right back up and blowing out lungs (lead singer Ronnie Canizaro’s) eyeballs (the listeners’) and eardrums (those within a five mile radius). ‘A Mind Short Circuiting’ sounds exactly that with operatic elements, polyrhythmic guitars and chilling keys that tap nerves. Even if Born of Osiris’ thing isn’t necessarily your thing, this band’s commitment to their cause and craft is formidable. ‘Through Shadows’ is visionary, technical, unafraid and unique, and this band needs to keep making music exactly like this because it’s bloody good.
