Review: Volbeat – God Of Angels Trust

God Of Angels Trust

Vertigo/Universal

Music that has been recorded in a creative frenzy is far more interesting than that which has been polished to a shine (I’d take Kill ‘em All over The Black Album any day). That’s certainly the case with Volbeat’s latest long player, God Of Angels Trust, an album written in five weeks and recorded live-in-the-studio in just thirteen days. The result is direct, dynamic and comes loaded with the kind of brimstone fire you’d expect from a band releasing their debut album, not their ninth. The overarching aesthetic of this album is one of the nocturnal world and the characters who reside therein: serial killers, the Grim Reaper and ghostly apparitions all get a look in here, but you’ll also find songs about spiritualism and parenthood. It’s a nice mix of the visceral and cerebral, and when delivered by a band that rolls Black Sabbath, Johnny Cash and Danzig into one perfect package you have arena ready anthems such as ‘Acid Rain’ that are sure to go down a storm wherever they’re unleashed. As Volbeat approach their thirty-fifth anniversary God Of Angels Trust suggests they’re going to be around for a while yet.
