Review: Diaz Brothers – The World Is Yours

The World Is Yours

Serial Bowl Records

For a band born from the ashes of 1980s UK hardcore hoodlums HDQ, The Diaz Brothers have some unusual influences. The band draw inspiration from the likes of The Who, Stooges, and mod revivalists Secret Affair (covering the latter’s ‘My World’ on a limited 7”), a motley bunch who all share a certain energy and sound devoid of extraneous frills (but big on thrills) and that’s precisely what The Brothers bring to their sophomore album The World Is Yours. Featuring eleven tracks that leap straight for the jugular, this record derives much of its power from its pared-back nature and shows just how commanding bass, drums and guitars can be. What it shares with the likes of The Stooges is a strong sense of groove and melody, no matter how fast and furious tracks such as ‘Anxiety Landslide’ are, there’s a swing underpinning proceedings that recalls a time when there was a real art to moshing. It also bestows on this album a crossover vibe that’ll appeal to metalheads and spiky tops in equal measure as the energy with which this quintet play is highly contagious. The World Is Yours…go and take it.
