Live Review: New Years Day, 02 Academy, London

New Years Day/Conquer Divide/Fearless Vampire Killers

The 02 Academy, Islington, London

31/1/2025

It’s just a short walk to the 02 from Angel tube station. The venue, at the rear of a shopping complex, is actually a rather decent place for fans. It might not be ornate but, helped by nice guy security it is welcoming. Fearless Vampire Killers make the stage their own early on. They haven’t lost any of their sparkle since their return in 2022 and prove to be a hit with the crowd. The theatrical overtones, enigmatic presence and anthemic songs all make for a great show. Let’s hope they stay the course now for many years to come.

Conquer Divide take to the stage with real gusto. It’s pretty clear they want to cram in a much as they can into their allotted time and they do just that with a show that is full of beans. Their modern metal sound has at its core a clean/growled vocal combo which hits the spot well. In fact Kia Castillo’s pitch and tone are exceptional ranging from ballsy rock belts to virtual ethereal passages. The tub thumping and bass are full of energy and with two guitars in the mix the sound is extra full. The Michigan five piece only add to their already strong reputation as ones to watch.

Can it really be five years since New Years Day last graced the UK with their musical flair? They do say absence makes the heart grow fonder and the reaction to their entrance seems to confirm that. The crowd are very noisy in showing their approval for every song, and every note. Ash Costello is in fine fettle, a powerhouse who fills every corner of the 02 with her amazing voice. You get to hear a lot of very good singers but not many can match this level of projection. The music is thumping you in the chest with bass, drum and rhythms smacking you hard in the chest just to make sure you get the beat. Nikki Misery is a bit special too, a guitarist that truly knows how to rock out. Five years is a long time in music but the wait proves to be very much worth it. Hopefully this wonderful band won’t leave it so long next time.
