Hin Helga Kvöl – Century Media Records

Stick a ‘do not disturb’ sign on your head, get this record on, and feel refreshed, mesmerised and happy. And maybe a little scared to be fair. ‘Hin Helga Kvöl’ (The Holy Suffering) opens with the euphoric melody of ‘Hún Andar’ followed by the frenzied title track. Just two songs in and these Icelandic atmospheric rockers have transported us away to a place where dreamy and dark collide. And in this land, drums are not simply played. They are smashed. Sticks must be splintering all over the shop. Knowledge of the Icelandic language not up to scratch? Sólstafir’s music paints lush, vivid pictures, while the varying tone and power of the vocals get the point across perfectly. Inspired by the band’s cultural heritage and Iceland’s breathtaking landscapes, ‘Hin Helga Kvöl’ balances piano-led rock ballads, punk vibes and – is that a saxophone??? If Icelandic rock is your thing, great work friend. But if it’s not Sólstafir will sell it to you.
