Review: The March Violets – Crocodile Promises

The March Violets

Crocodile Promises

Metropolis Records

The March Violets are back. Again. Their previous albums pulled together 40 years of music, almost all of the music having been written over the 40 years since the band started. Crocodile Promises though is something new, an album of freshly written songs that no one has heard before. The question then is can the band still do it? Do they have what it takes to write new music? The answer is a resounding yes. When you have a musician of Tom’s calibre and a poet with Rosie’s talent there was never any doubt that this album would be something special. Long time fans have been waiting for new music for what seems like a lifetime, and they’ve got an absolute belter of an album. Every song is still firmly rooted in the old 1980’s Gothic ancestry, it still sounds like The March Violets of old, while benefitting from over 40 years of musical experience and modern recording methods. It sounds amazing. It’s also not as dark as you might expect, with some fun lyrics. With Mat Thorpe back on bass duties in the band, taking over from William Faith, we wait and see what direction the band will move into for the future.
