Review: Night Thieves – Polarity

Polarity – Self-Released

Indicative of the sleeve in which it is housed, there’s a duality running through Night Thieves’
third EP, Polarity. This London quartet have a sound that sails between light, airy passages and crushingly heavy sections, and the two often fuse in unexpected and surprising ways. With a deft drumbeat ‘Collide’ is the opening track that pits dense sonics with expansive spaces, and it feels as if the band are holding up a huge mirror to make their sound twice as big. Jess Moyle has a haunting voice that reaches deep into your heart, and then gives the strings a good tug, while the band sculpt sonics to create soundscapes that are equally emotive. The two combined make an explosive pairing, and when you factor in a soul searching lyricism you really do have a hefty listen. The four cuts that comprise Polarity make for the perfect calling card, yet the band don’t feel the need to throw the kitchen sink at this release; they’re confident in their own prowess to let these songs speak for themselves. With each track hovering around the three- minute mark Polarity doesn’t overstay its welcome, and certainly leaves the listener hungry for more, and you feel that their next step should be a full-length album.
