Decapitated, Obscura, Inferi & The Materia
Leeds Key Club
11/11/23
Tonight is a prodigious night! Decapitated are performing a full album play through of their seminal, Nihility, opus. To celebrate over 20 years of neck snapping metal.
The sold out Key Club is vivacious as The Materia open with their chunky groove laded take on technical death metal.
Next up Inferi supply a neo classical take on modern death metal and a wildly energetic frontman.
Obscura shows us a virtuoso display of progressive death metal that carries so much extra weight live, the fretless bass parts oozing fluidity and elasticity.
But tonight is about Decapitated. Bursting into their marathon set, literally ripping through classic after classic with no introductions. It’s frankly breath-taking to watch them crush Nihility in full with 20 years of modern metal behind them. Rafal’s giant dreads are flying as he pours the depths of his soul into deep gutturals, he’s so hypnotic that you almost forget that stood next to him is long-time Decapitated member and current Machine Head guitar god Waclaw “Vogg” Kieltyka both are truly intimidating up close and adopt the 1000 yard stares of killers. When the awesome ‘Spheres Of Madness’ erupts every voice in the crowd is roaring. Pawel Pasek’s gnarly low end bass is crystal clear and brilliantly underpins the assault alongside vicious surgical drumming from Vadar alumni James Stewart.
As the band finish their magnum opus we suddenly find out we’re almost getting two Decapitated gigs for the price of one as the band tear through more recent cuts like ‘Cancer Culture’, ‘Never’, ‘Earth Scar’ and a seismic closing ‘Iconoclast’ threatens to level the building. It’s been a masterclass!
