Review: Supakarma – Supakarma

Supakarma

Supakarma – Glass Mile Records

Shelved and waiting for its release, Supakarma’s long-awaited debut album is finally here. Untouched for decades it took the tragic loss of the band’s guitarist Jamie in 2019 for the band to regroup and finish what they started. Listening to the album with the knowledge this was written to be released in the ’90s makes it all the more interesting. It’s like dipping into a time capsule but it’s surprisingly fresh-sounding and pertinent even now. The opening track ‘What Are You Waiting For?’ is a fitting track to kick off the album. Starting off wistful it evolves vocally and musically into something more rousing with an unforgettable hook. ‘Digital Vision’ of course written in a time very different from our all-consuming technological lives we live today is fascinating how lyrically it can be so relevant. Bursting with upbeat gritty riffs and Daniel Binks vocal stylings that are unequivocally so 90s rock yet such a welcomed sound. They aren’t trying to rehash the genre, this is fresh for then as it is now. The tone of the album changes throughout mixing slower thoughtful ballads with anthemic upbeat rock. Stand-out tracks include ‘New Test Cannonball’ ‘You Could Be My Heroine’ and ‘I Remember You’.
