Review: LJ Pheonix And The Renegades – Atlantis

LJ Pheonix & The Renegades

Atlantis – Self Released (Digital distribution via Earache Records)

Atlantis takes you on a rollercoaster ride mixing in different elements to its sound and offering something quite unique. LJ Pheonix on vocals continually surprises you on each track, leaving the listener unknowing which form he will take next. ‘In Time’ opens with an electro beat paired with psychedelic guitars. It’s hard to put your finger on what the vocals remind you of as a few bands and artists spring to mind such as HIM, Depeche Mode and Lou Reed. On other tracks such as ‘Follow Me’ Pheonix has a hint of David Bowie going on and then out of nowhere will surprise you with his range, belting out lyrics full of intensity. The instrumentals give an otherworldly vibe throughout, feeling like you could be floating through another dimension with the guitars, synths and beats. ‘Fountain of Youth’ is another string in to their bow with a different take on vocals that are reminiscent of DIO and Iron Maiden. ‘Love You Endlessly’ is a stand-out track from start to finish. Beginning softly with acoustic guitars, totally changing the direction of the mood. Pheonix goes from a throaty almost Marilyn Manson-esque style then to melodic Maiden reaching those high notes! Then those electric guitars come back in and it’s like pow! There is so much that can be said about Atlantis and LJ Pheonix & The Renegades. It’s clear from the outset that this band has a clear vision and their ability to switch it up to the extent they do is to be revered. It’s an album that you need to hear repeatedly to understand the extent of the talent they have. Although at times reminiscent of some of the greats as mentioned, it isn’t an imitation. These guys have offered up something daring and fresh.
