Soulburn
Noa’s D’ark – Century Media
Obnoxious, irreverent, brutal and unpleasant. Some of our favourite adjectives here at Devo. You want happy, joyful, skipping through the flowers music? Maybe another day. But today belongs to Soulburn, to which the opening description applies. Here is a band riding on a musical knife edge. Fast, cutting and taking up no more room than necessary. No space for niceties. No time to make friends. Just an onslaught of doomified black metal that puts so much pressure on your ears you can feel it worm its way within and tighten around your throat. The vocals are gruesome, guitars low and grating, and the whole effect of the album is distressing and one of destruction. And you know that’s how you like it. Plus, ‘Noa’s D’ark’ is released in November – on Friday 13th. Now if that’s not dedication, what is?
