Is Hellenic Black Metal Enjoying a Resurgence?

Hellenic black metal may be one of the lesser-known subgenres of the metal scene, but it appears to be enjoying renewed attention and could gain even more traction in the years ahead. A key facet of this type of music is its connection to Ancient Greece and its mythology. Now, some bands are benefiting from renewed interest in this subject in popular culture.

Some of the acts leading this renaissance include Yoth Iria and Automaton, and they are helping to bring attention to Greek metal internationally.

Hellenic Black Metal First Gained Traction in the 1990s

Hellenic black metal first emerged in Greece in the 1990s, and developed its own distinctive sound that separated it from the Scandinavian black-metal movement that was going on at the same time. Bands such as Rotting Christ and Varathron helped establish the subgenre, which was characterised by overdriven guitars combined with atmospheric keyboards and a strong connection to spiritual themes.

Both of these bands have developed songs based on Greek mythology, using various stories as inspiration. At the same time that this scene was developing, there were also similar mythology-based metal acts emerging from Scandinavia with a focus on Norse influences.

However, the Hellenic bands set themselves apart by offering more melodic guitar riffs and atmospheric elements. It was more theatrical, reflecting the grandeur of some of the stories that helped inspire it.

Popularity of Greek Mythology in the Mainstream May Be Helping

One of the reasons why these bands are finding new audiences in the modern era could be thanks to the fact that Greek mythology is now so prominent in the entertainment market. With books like Madeline Miller’s Circe, Christopher Nolan’s recent adaptation of The Odyssey, and musicals like Hadestown, there’s a lot of inspiration out there.

Greek mythology themes are also widespread in the online casino industry. Indeed, many of the leading progressive jackpot slot machines are based on classic Greek gods, with the Age of the Gods series now spanning more than 15 titles.

Now looks like the perfect time for Hellenic metal bands to release new music, thanks to Greek mythology being well and truly in the spotlight in popular culture. These acts give listeners new ways to experience and engage with these iconic stories.

Which Acts Are Bringing Hellenic Metal Back?

Hellenic metal has been evolving ever it began, and now there are a few acts that are helping to promote it to modern audiences. One of the best examples of this is Yoth Iria, which was formed in 2019 by metal veterans Jim Mutilator and The Magnus. Then there’s Septicflesh and Varathron, both of whom have been around since the 1990s, and are continuing to attract modern listeners.

It’s not only the classics though – bands like Automaton, formed in Athens in 2011, focus on Ancient Greek and Minoan mythology in their lyrics. For something more atmospheric, there’s Celtefog, a one-man band, and if you’re looking for something with more modern inspiration, there’s Yovel.
