Review: Green Lung – Necropolitan

Green Lung

Necropolitan

Nuclear Blast Recordings

For those of us who grew up on a diet of classic heavy metal and Hammer Horror films, Green Lung are a welcome addition to the music scene, pulling the sound of the former and the imagery of the latter into an intriguing mix. It’s an enduring aesthetic, and the band have attracted legions of fans; their latest album, Necropolitan, is sure to swell their ranks. A good introduction can really set the scene, and that’s exactly what ‘Open The Hellmouth’ does. It’s like stepping through C.S. Lewis’ Wardrobe, only the world of Necropolitan is populated by songs that cast a dark spell over the listener. Green Lung are kind enough to wear their influences on their sleeves; Uriah Heep, Leaf Hound and Pagan Altar are all evident in tracks like ‘Ozymandias’, yet the band are wise enough to colour things in their own hue, and the parting shot ‘To The Gallows Born’ could be no one but themselves. By harnessing the best of the past and delivering it firmly in the present, Green Lung are signposting a bright future.
