What better way to celebrate a twenty-fifth anniversary than with a new album? And when that record is as good as Airbourne’s eponymously titled latest, it suggests that the party is going to get very lively indeed. Airbourne is the sound of a band recharged, presenting a dozen tracks that come armed to the teeth with hard, muscular riffs and melodies so arresting they should be illegal. A prime example is the opening shot ‘Gutsy’, an aptly-titled track that’s on steroids; it’s pumped up and half-crazed, succinctly setting the tone for the rest of the record. There’s a lot to be said for bands who give fans exactly what they want, and Airbourne do exactly that. There’s no danger of them exploring their softer side or sneaking a ballad under the net, delivering anthem after anthem instead (after anthem). Powered by the kind of riffs you wish Angus Young would still write, there’s a life-affirming quality to tracks such as ‘Kid In A Candy Store’, so much so that they should really be available on the NHS and could do more to chase away those black clouds than anything a doctor could prescribe. Airbourne evidences a band who are built for the long haul…so here’s to the next twenty-five years!
