Slaughtersun
Black Marrow (EP)
Self-Released
It’s been full steam ahead for progressive death metal quartet Slaughtersun since they burst out of New Jersey in 2023. Having left a blazing trail of singles in their wake, they step up to the next level with their debut EP Black Marrow. Collecting their first four singles, it’s a journey into the dark heart of metal and pushes at the genres boundaries with violence and force. Brought together by Ben Karas (Thank You Scientist), each band member has a long and storied history and their pedigree becomes immediately obvious on ‘Fall Of The Firmament’. Following a brief intro, it’s the musical equivalent of a vicious street fight and the blows it lands are equally bruising. Vocalist Justin Hillman has an impressive range which incorporates everything from clean singing to demonic growls and his voice becomes an instrument which adds a layer of intense heat to an already fiery sound. When you factor in a bombastic rhythm section, things could easily go off the rails, yet the band lock in tightly, mixing tempos to ensure things never become staid. Sometimes they stomp, others they thrash, and it’s not knowing in what guise the band will appear that makes Black Marrow so engaging.
